President Donald Trump’s approval rating has continued to dip over recent months, especially in Democratic states such as Illinois.
From the enduring war in Iran to the increasing cost of living and the administration’s handling of the recent cyclosporiasis outbreak, many Americans are publicly expressing dissatisfaction with the president’s job performance.
Here’s how Trump’s approval looks nationally and in Illinois.
Trump approval rating in Illinois: Civiqs
Trump’s job approval rating in Illinois remained roughly the same between March and July 2026, according to online survey platform Civiqs. Here’s where it stands as of July 20:
- Favorable: 32%
- Unfavorable: 64%
- Unsure: 4%

Trump’s national approval rating as of July 21, according to data from Civiqs, dipped to the following:
- Approve — 38%.
- Disapprove — 58%.
- Neither — 4%.
Trump approval rating in Illinois: The Economist
Trump’s Illinois approval rating fell to -39% as of July 21, according to data from The Economist.
Trump’s national approval rating: The Economist
Trump’s net approval rating dipped to -23% (the lowest since the beginning of his second term), according to The Economist (July 21, 2026):
- Favorable — 36%
- Unfavorable — 60%
- Unsure — 4%
Trump national approval rating: Economist/YouGov
Trump’s net national approval sits at -24%, just two percentage points better than his worst net approval in either term, according to a new Economist/YouGov poll (July 21, 2026):
- Approve — 36%.
- Disapprove — 60%.
In the same poll, 52% of respondents said that Trump is too old to be president, an increase of 12 percentage points from January. According to YouGov, the margin of error was plus or minus 3.3 percentage points.
Trump national approval rating: Washington Post/Ipsos
A new Washington Post/Ipsos poll conducted July 8-13 shows most Americans disapprove of Trump’s job performance:
- Approve — 37%.
- Disapprove — 61%.
The same poll shows that just 33% of Americans approve of Trump’s handling of the economy, while 29% approve of his oversight of the Iran War and 40% approve of his immigration policies.
Trump national approval rating: Harvard CAPS/Harris
A Harvard CAPS/Harris poll conducted July 11-12 shows a 42% approval rating for Trump, with voters mostly concerned about inflation and the conflict in Iran.
More than half of respondents approved of Trump’s immigration policies (49%) and battle against crime (47%), while about a third approved of his handling of inflation (35%) and the Iran conflict (38%).
What is Trump’s average approval?
Trump’s approval rating has been net negative for more than a year, and has fluctuated but trended more negative over the past several months. Here is Trump’s average approval rating, according to aggregators:
- RealClearPolitics Poll average, as of July 21: 41.2% approve, 55.6% disapprove
- New York Times, as of July 21: 39% approve, 58% disapprove
- Silver Bulletin, as of July 21: 39.3% approve, 57.7% disapprove
