NORMAL, Ill. – Just in time for the start of the college football season, Illinois State University is partnering with 93 Octane Brewery to launch two new officially licensed ‘Bird Brews” to add to the lineup: Back The Birds and 1857. Both beers will be available at Redbird sporting events this fall and can also be found at 93 Octane’s two locations in St. Charles and Elmhurst.
Founded and owned by Illinois State University alumnus Mario Spina, 93 Octane Brewery has always been committed to creating memorable experiences that bring people together. The brewery opened its original location in St. Charles, Illinois, in 2019 and recently expanded with the opening of a second taproom location in Elmhurst, Illinois, in August 2025.
“Our friends at 93 Octane have helped us continue the connection with our Chicagoland alumni and we truly appreciate it,” Illinois State Deputy Director of Athletics Paul Kabbes said. “Proud ISU alum Mario Spina and his team are committed to growing the Redbird brand and directly impacting our 400+ student-athletes spread throughout our 18 sports. There’s no better time to be a Redbird and 93 Octane embraces that!”
Back the Birds is a refreshing, easy-drinking ale that celebrates the connection between Redbird fans, alumni, and the community while bringing together the passion of Illinois State pride with the craft of an alumni owned brewery. Easy going and golden to the core, this ale is like sunshine in a glass and Magnum hops add a tidy bitterness, while the 2-row and Vienna malts add just a whisper of toast.
1857 is packed with vibrant, juicy flavors from Citra and Mosaic hops and features bright citrus aromas, touches of tropical fruit and a gentle sweetness that come together in every sip. 1857 is your flavorful companion for unwinding without missing a beat.
“As an alumnus of Illinois State, it’s incredibly meaningful to see 93 Octane Brewery partner with the University,” 93 Octane Owner and CEO Spina said. “Back the Birds and 1857 represent more than great craft beer – they celebrate the pride, traditions, and community that make Illinois State so special. We’re honored to be a proud partner of Illinois State Athletics and look forward to raising a glass with Redbird fans for years to come. GO BIRDS!”
“93 Octane Brewery has created a home away from home for Redbird fans and alumni in the Chicago suburbs,” Redbird Sports Properties General Manager Matt Moran stated. “We’re excited to bring a taste of their brewery to gameday by featuring 1857 and Back the Birds at Redbird athletic events throughout the upcoming season.”
