CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – The Illinois Division of Intercollegiate Athletics has announced the hiring of MaKayla Gayler as the University’s next Head Cheerleading Coach. In addition to leading the Fighting Illini Cheerleading program, Gayler will serve in a role within the Athletics Department in marketing and fan engagement, helping elevate the Illinois game day experience while supporting fan-focused initiatives across all sports.
A former Fighting Illini cheerleader and two-time team captain, Gayler returns to Champaign after building an impressive professional career centered on leadership, education, and team development. She becomes the program’s next leader following the retirement of longtime head coach Stephanie Record.
“Illinois has always been home to me,” Gayler said. “Growing up just outside Champaign, I dreamed of one day wearing Orange and Blue, and my experience as a Fighting Illini cheerleader shaped me into the leader I am today. Returning to my alma mater to lead this program is an incredible honor. I look forward to building on the tradition established by Coach Record, developing outstanding student-athletes, and creating an environment that reflects the pride, passion, and excellence of Illinois Athletics. I’m equally excited to contribute to our Marketing and Fan Engagement team and help create unforgettable experiences for Fighting Illini fans.”
Gayler cheered at Illinois from 2016-20, representing the Fighting Illini at sporting events, alumni gatherings, and numerous community appearances. A two-time captain elected by her teammates, she served as the primary liaison between the coaching staff and student-athletes while helping cultivate a culture of accountability, communication, and teamwork.
Following her collegiate career, Gayler has remained deeply involved in cheerleading. She served as a Universal Cheerleaders Association instructor, coaching athletes from the elementary through collegiate levels throughout the Midwest while teaching technical skills, leadership, sportsmanship, and team culture. She has also volunteered as a coach with Oakwood School District and VC Tumbling & Cheer, mentoring athletes, assisting competitive teams, evaluating tryouts, and leading skill development and leadership training.
In her dual role with Illinois Athletics, Gayler will oversee all aspects of the Fighting Illini Cheerleading program, including cheerleader development, recruitment, game day performances, community outreach, and alumni engagement. She will also contribute to the department’s Marketing and Fan Engagement efforts, supporting the creation of memorable experiences that strengthen the connection between Illinois Athletics and Fighting Illini fans.
Gayler earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Illinois and was recognized during her time as a cheerleader with the team’s Loyalty Award and Varsity “I” Association Senior Sponsor Award.
