Chicago (AP) —A federal crime was filed against a Chicago man earlier this year for carpooling driver Carjacking and murder.
Edmund Harris, 18, has been charged with hijacking, firing a gun during a violent crime, and dying from the use of a gun. Harris faces death from 10 years in prison if convicted.
Javier Ramos, a 46-year-old Uber driver, was shot dead early March 23 after dropping passengers. The person escaped from the scene in a Ramos car. Ramos later died at Mount Sinai Hospital. Prosecutors say Harris was arrested on Friday morning.
US federal prosecutor Jon Rauch said the charges against Harris were the result of a strong partnership between Chicago’s federal, state and local law enforcement agencies.
“There is no pointless violence in our society like the one charged in this indictment,” Lausch said. “We do not hesitate to prosecute violent carjackers to the fullest extent of federal law.”
Shortly after Ramos’ death, the Independent Drivers Guild called on the ride-hailing company to do more to protect the drivers. They suggested requiring passengers to upload a photo of their driver’s license, state ID, or passport to their account profile.
