(25News Now) – The federal government shutdown is now the longest in history.

There’s no end in sight to the current stalemate as Republicans and Democrats bicker over the right time to negotiate on healthcare.

Democrats point out that without extending pandemic-era subsidies, health costs will go up drastically. Senate Democrats have voted against reopening the government several times, because they want to negotiate with Republicans on healthcare.

U.S. Sen. Tammy Duckworth (D-Illinois) said right now, all bipartisan conversations to end the shutdown are unofficial.

“I’ve been personally having conversations with my Republican colleagues, but it’s all informal because President Trump has not allowed Republican leadership to authorize formal negotiations, so this is why we’re stuck,” she said.

In turn, the president said that Democrats are to blame for the shutdown. He told “60 Minutes” that he will only negotiate if the government is up and running. In that interview, Trump committed to working on healthcare if Democrats vote to reopen the government.
