PEORIA (25News Now) – With the end of the record-long government shutdown in sight, Illinois lawmakers are voicing their opinion on the Senateโs recent vote to bring the shutdown to a close.
The Senate voted 60-40 on a deal that would potentially end the government shutdown. Eight democrats joined Senate Republicans to pass the vote.
Illinois Republican Congressman Darin LaHood said he is happy with the progress that was made in the U.S. Senate due to the eight democrats voting to end the shutdown.
Although there is a way to go, Lahood said there is an โobligation to get the government openโ and that healthcare funding should not delay that goal.
โWeโre going to have a further conversation on the issue of healthcare,โ LaHood said. โWeโre not going to be held hostage by spending more money on Obamacare. Iโm glad some democrats broke away from Chuck Schumer to end the shutdown.โ
Illinois Democratic Representative Eric Sorensen emphasized the need for both parties to work together and not fight each other to end the shutdown. He said he hopes that Republicans will find a way to reduce healthcare and food costs.
With senate democrats voting to end the shutdown, Sorensen is optimistic that a deal can be reached.
โMy hope, going from the Senate agreement going back to the Congress, is, โalright we moved forward, we stepped up. Are we going to be met in good faith by the folks on the other side?โโ Sorensen asked.
Both LaHood and Sorensen will be returning to Washington, D.C. on Wednesday to vote on the bill the Senate passed to reopen the government.
If passed, the bill will fund the government until Jan. 30
