ANDY AMEY: High school basketball shot clocks come to Illinois – Terre Haute Tribune-Star

From the late 1960s through most of the 1970s I spent considerable time riding the buses — and occasionally even the planes — with the Indiana State men’s basketball team.

For eight of those seasons that meant I had plenty of exposure to the philosophies of the late coach Gordon Stauffer, whose three favorite words in the English language were “control the tempo.” The team that took the better shots, no matter how long it took, had the better chance of winning, he theorized, and if a team was able to play at a pace that made its opponent uncomfortable, so much the better.
