Less than two weeks before its season opener, an Illinois high school football team has opted to cancel its entire 2026 varsity campaign.
Eisenhower High School, which is based in Decatur, Illinois, joins Litchfield Senior High School in canceling its varsity football season.
Low Participation Ends Eisenhower’s Season
“Decatur Public Schools #61 announces that Eisenhower High School will not field a varsity football team for the 2026 season due to low participation numbers and a concern for student safety,” a Facebook post from the school district read. “The school’s junior varsity football program will continue as scheduled, providing student-athletes with the opportunity to participate and develop within the program.
“The school has notified the Illinois High School Association, scheduled opponents, student-athletes, families and coaching staff of this decision.”
Opponents Left Searching for Solutions
Coming off a 1-8 run in 2025, the Panthers were scheduled to open the season on August 21 at Mascoutah. Road trips to Mt. Zion and Rochester followed before the planned home debut for 2026 vs. Normal University on September 11.
Games with Glenwood, MacArthur, Springfield Southeast and Lanphier completed the now-cancelled schedule. Those teams now all have an open date in which they can either claim a forfeit victory or look to schedule a new opponent.
IHSA Explains Scheduling Options
In an email to USA Today Sports, Illinois High School Association Executive Director Matt Troha said “it is too late” in most cases to try and reschedule a new game.
“There are a few teams out there that only have eight games on the schedule,” Troha said. “So it’s possible that a few add games, but unlikely they all do.”
If a team accepts a new opponent, that result will be the official one on their win-loss record, meaning there is some risk in doing so as the forfeit goes down as a victory.
Troha did add that “in recent years, we have also had some teams choose to double-up and play a conference team twice. They could choose to do that within their league, as well.”
Program Hopes to Rebuild Through Junior Varsity
The Panthers have won one game each of the past five seasons following back-to-back winless campaigns in both 2018 and 2019. They went 7-4 in back-to-back seasons in 2015 and 2016.
Like Eisenhower, Litchfield Senior will attempt to field a junior varsity team this season. The Panthers cited a low number of upperclassmen as the deciding factor.
Part of a Growing National Trend
Eisenhower joins a growing list of schools nationwide facing declining participation numbers. Four Iowa programs have also canceled their varsity seasons this year, with Davis County becoming the latest.
